Over the past 5 years she has become increasingly breathless but has only seen her GP twice in that time with bouts of ‘bronchitis’. On these occasions she has refused any request to stop smoking. You have been asked to see her.

- Grace, aged 32 years, has had asthma since she was 4 years old. She attends the surgery for her annual asthma review. She has recently discovered that she is pregnant for the first time and although she is very excited she is also rather anxious as she is not clear about how her pregnancy might affect her asthma and vice versa.

- Jeremy, who is now 8 years old, was diagnosed with eczema and asthma at the age of 18 months and was then admitted to hospital on several occasions. He was given a nebuliser to use at home if required, and was followed up on an out-patient basis. He has not been seen regularly by his GP for his asthma.
